Last night (July 1, 2008) several skateboarders in Shari3 Thaqafeh were taken down to the police station. Why? I'm not sure what provoked this action.
They had to each sign a paper that they will not skate in Shari3 Thaqafeh again, and if they did so they would have to pay 1000JD fine.
Not only did Hussien Park ban skateboarding from the whole park (besides the roller rink they so generously and humbly built for us), but now Shmeisani!
Every once in a while a cop will tell us not to skate, but never has it reached this extent. This time it seems they're pretty firm on what they've said. Sadly, they don't realize that Shmeisani has become the epicenter of everything skateboarding related (let alone action sports in general). With no Shmeisani, no Hussien Park, skateboarding in Amman might take a huge blow and start moving backwards.
Unless we can turn it back around. Forget all the other spots. Forget Hussien Park. Forget future skatepark initiatives. This is Shmeisani were talking about, this one we definetely do not want to loose.
So tell me, now what do we do?
Discuss suggestions in the comments section. Please

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!
As they say, if we don't learn our history, we're bound to repeat it. So my suggestion would be for somebody to go look up the case of LOVE Park and see how they reacted and how they went about it. Even though they didn't win LOVE park back but they might have had some good ideas that we can use...
OMG!!! fuck! thats lower than low, police should be busy fighting crime, first it's metal and now its skateboarding! so r u guys gna do sth about it? maybe call mama red bull?
we need to appeal to our local authorities, we have had a positive impact on many people and the community as a whole, we need to reveal that image of wholesome behavior and ambition to the local authorities.
nah i dont think red bull gives a shit........
i think what ahmad said is best, write a letter to the mayor.
but overall i dont think its gona last, its always like that, they freak outa little then everything goes back to normal.
but if things didnt go back to normal and we sent a letter to the mayor and he responded, i think we're gona have something good out of that, maybe a skatepark...
of course it wouldnt be as good as culture street but it'll work until the police calms down,.
its our "LOVE park" man, they cant keep us out.
yea writing a letter to the mayor is probably our best bet. its impractical of them to kick us out of shmeisani, and not provide an alternative. i think if we appeal to the mayor he would probably understand what shmeisani is for us, and by doing so we would shed a little light on skateboarding in amman to government officials. it would be sick if everyone (including all the skaters who arent here yet [saif, dania, etc]) could write a paragraph answering:
What does skateboarding mean to you? and what is shmeisani mean for skateboarding?
then i could compile them as testemonials from those affected, and incorporate them in the letter.
a little work from everyone can go a long way in this situation. if everyone can do their part (by answering the above question in paragraph form), im pretty sure alot can be done in aid of our cause.
take action, we can do this.
send your contributions to: skatejordan@live.com
and if u have any suggestions as to what we can do with the letter, feel free to discuss it here also.
This is absurd, I mean it could be for security measures, but come on, banning skateboarding from Jordan isn't going to do any good for the country nor the people. What good would it bring? A bad name for the country? Yes, when people know about this kind of banning I'm sure they wouldn't be interested in such place, where freedom has its limits. And these limits are seriously hideous. I just think if banning skateboarding some places is okay, but places such as parks and empty streets, that's just plain wrong.
Maybe you Jordanians should show them that you're taking this seriously and it is a real sport, then probably they would let you practice it at ease. However I agree with the comments you should write the mayor a letter explaining your point of view.
thanks for your support louis....
"where freedom has its limits....you're taking this seriously and it is a real sport, then probably they would let you practice it at ease." - louis
Yea such limits are hideous. the "real sport" view is also something to mention in the letter. thanks for the support
well for me , shmeisani is my 2nd house or w8 first :D ...!!
so whats the best thing we can all do i think we have to get all the mag newspaper etc..!! and show it 2 someone in sportcity or something!!!
coz we cant do anything els i think!!
and about this stuff i have everthing we did :D:D:D
ok then it would be cool if you could put them all together, and we'll take them to sports city sometime this week.
ahahaha hamzeh bahibak ya zalameh :D
oh and i sent my an email to skatejordan@live.com
alright thanks i got it
so since we skated it today and nothing happened, i suggest that the motherfucking pigs were on theyr period that day and like moe said its most likely gonna go back to normal...untill the next time theyr pussies bleed again
Its good that we were able to skate today, but i think now we can take advantage of this occurence. Personally the 1000jd fine seemed a little unofficial, but it still did worry me about shari3 thqafeh's future. Even though we can skate, this isnt where it ends. I think its time we take action, this was a good trigger that we can't (or shouldn't) resist but to react to and utilize. We shouldn't be put in situations where our freedom is limited to very confined borders. These borders are gradually reducing in measure of our freedom, and our abilities to continue as skateboarders is being increasingly withstanded with times passing.
So maybe we can skate in Shmeisani. That's good, but not good enough.
We are active members of society. Our initiative of using skateboarding as a detering tool from societies many negatives alone is of worthy notice.
We are pioneers for skateboarding in jordan and skateboarders to come. We musn't allow social ignorance to supress our movement, yet it should be considered a chance to understand misconceptions and misunderstandings and cater to their sources. In other words premature impressions are only expected of skateboarding in jordan. This is our chance to influence the development of mature impressions.
We have adopted a physically active lifestyle that is so very valued by the government (as seen in ad campaigns and so on). It's our job to present skateboarding as a sport just like any other. In doing so governmental support can almost be promised, with all of the sports associations found around Amman.
So its about time we brought skateboardings good face to the surface, to prevent mishaps such as the recent police incident to occur again. A little initiative can go a long way, and can push skateboarding out of its jordanian trough. Let us enjoy skateboardings simplest pleasures again hassle free.
lets do this.
i totally agree with you, ahamd
